Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Forces Claim Numerous Fatalities in Recent Border Fighting

Frontier Tensions Intensify
Pakistani Military and Afghan Authorities Accuse One Another of Initiating Attacks in Afghanistan's Border District of Spin Boldak

Fresh fighting broke out along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier early on Wednesday, with each side accusing the other of starting lethal clashes.

The Pakistani armed forces announced that its forces had eliminated "fifteen to twenty Taliban fighters" and injured numerous others in the Spin Boldak district frontier area.

A Afghan authorities spokesman said that 12 Afghan civilians had been killed and more than 100 wounded by Pakistani firing. He added that several military personnel had been killed. Not one of the alleged fatalities could be verified by third parties.

Hostilities between the neighbors has flared since blasts shook Afghanistan last week, which Kabul blamed on Pakistan. The Taliban reject allegations that it is sheltering armed groups targeting Pakistan.

Online Platforms and Armed Engagements

The opposing forces are not only fighting for the advantage on the frontier, but also on social media, trying to persuade the public that their side is inflicting greater losses.

The latest fighting come after severe border hostilities over the weekend, when the Afghan forces claimed to have eliminated 58 members of the Pakistani military and Islamabad reported it neutralized 200 "Taliban and linked insurgents". The reported casualty figures provided by both parties could not be confirmed by external sources.

A few days of fragile peace that had persisted since the recent days were broken on Wednesday.

Local Accounts and Impact

Videos allegedly of the fighting and its aftermath have been circulated online and on messaging groups, including images claiming to be of those deceased and blurry shots from night vision cameras purporting to be of guard positions demolished. These videos have not been authenticated.

A source in the border area in Afghanistan reported that fighting erupted at around 4 a.m. local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday). Another local in Spin Boldak, who lives about a short distance away from the border crossing, reported that "very heavy hostilities persisted for almost several hours".

"We observed unmanned aircraft and fighter planes flying over us, a number of our relatives are injured," they said.

A doctor in one of the medical facilities in Spin Boldak reported that he counted "7 bodies and 36 wounded brought to the medical center", including males, females and children.

The situation were "strained" and more victims were being transferred to medical care, he noted.

Displacement and International Responses

A local authority figure in Spin Boldak announced that "numerous of households have been forced to flee since last night due to the intense fighting". He said they were on "high alert" after a few military positions were targeted by aircraft from Pakistan. He further indicated that they had the bodies of 2 Pakistani military members.

In a separate overnight engagement on the north-western frontier, the Islamabad's forces said that 25 to 30 Taliban and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been killed.

The hostilities have prompted appeals for reduced tensions from other countries including Beijing and Moscow, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could intervene to facilitate a ceasefire.

On that day, Richard Bennett, UN special rapporteur on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, posted on X that he was "deeply concerned" by accounts of civilian casualties and displacement because of the fighting.

"I urge everyone involved to exercise the utmost caution, protect civilians, and abide by global regulations," he stated.

Long-Standing Disputes

Pakistan has for years alleged the Afghan Taliban of permitting the Pakistani militants to function from their land and battle against the Pakistani administration in an effort to enforce a rigid Islamic-led system of rule.

The Afghan Taliban government has always rejected this.
