The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the violent incident.
Originally charged with attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said officers would be around the city centre through Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the victim's relatives.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who might have observed the accused, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred near the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.
Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, who works nearby, described the emergency response after completing her shift around 10 PM Friday night.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances at about 21:00.
"A lot of co-workers use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk fundamentally, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting the city fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he said.
"She doesn't drive and works at major concert locations... considering a totally random act [happened], understandably, it's terrible."
